La Rioja has two completely different rural habitats: the valley and the mountains. This photo was taken in one of the highest villages in La Rioja, Santa Marina, which belongs to the municipality of Santa Engracia de Jubera, in the Jubera Valley, a Biosphere Reserve and one of the most depopulated rural areas of La Rioja in the heart of the Iberian System. However, the mountain range preserves many of the essences of La Rioja, marked by austerity, the rigours of the cold and the transhumant livestock farming that for centuries was its main source of wealth.
