Santo Domingo de la Calzada

Santo Domingo es uno de los principales hitos del Camino De Santiago a su paso por La Rioja. Recibe el nombre de su fundador Domingo García que construyó un puente sobre el Oja y el primer Hospital de peregrinos en la segunda mitad del Siglo XII que dio lugar a un núcleo urbano, artístico, económico y religioso que tuvo su importancia en la Baja Edad Media. Cuenta con una importante catedral gótica, que alberga un gran retablo construido por Damian Forment, el sepulcro del Santo y un gallinero donde habitan un gallo y una gallina vivos para recordar el milagro del Camino De Santiago. 

Las murallas, la torre exenta de la Catedral y su Parador son algunos de sus atractivos. La plaza de España, donde se encuentra el Ayuntamiento acogen en agosto la representación teatral de “Los milagros del Santo” y en diciembre, durante el puente de la Constitución se celebran el “Mercado del Camino” y un concurrido “Mercado Medieval” muy animado. 

Santo Domingo of the Way

Santo Domingo is one of the main landmarks of the Santiago´s Way as it passes through La Rioja. It receives the name of its founder Domingo García who built a bridge over the Oja and the first Pilgrims Hospital in the second half of the 12th century that gave rise to an urban, artistic, economic and religious nucleus that had its importance in the late Middle Ages. It has an important Gothic cathedral, which houses a large altarpiece built by Damian Forment, the tomb of the Saint and a hen house where a live rooster and hen live to commemorate the miracle of the Camino De Santiago.

The walls, the free-standing tower of the Cathedral and its Parador are some of its attractions.
