Davalillo Castle
It stands on a hill overlooking the river Ebro, some 5 kilometres north of the town of San Asensio. It dates from the late 12th or early 13th century. Its location constitutes a magnificent watchtower from which the lands of Sonsierra and La Rioja Alta were watched over. Its mission, together with the neighbouring fortress of Briones, was to protect La Rioja from Navarrese attacks that could be carried out with relative ease across the fortified bridge of San Vicente de la Sonsierra.
