Convento de San Francisco (Santo Domingo de la Calzada)

Fue mandado construir por el Arzobispo de Zaragoza Fray Bernardo de Fresneda, confesor de Carlos V y de su hijo Felipe II.

El convento, de estilo herreriano y hermoso claustro de planta rectangular del año 1535. Destaca el crucero donde está el sepulcro del fundador, sobre un alto túmulo de jaspe, y donde reposa la figura de mármol del obispo; siendo un bello ejemplo de escultura romanista. Enfrente se levanta el retablo mayor, magnifica obra clasicista, ambos realizados hacia el año 1605.

Parte de él, está destinado a Taller Diocesano de restauración de obras de arte, parte a Parador de Turismo y a Hospital y Asilo de ancianos “Hospital del Santo”; frente a este, nos encontramos el monumento al Peregrino, del año 1971, (obra del escultor riojano Vicente Ochoa).

It was ordered to be built by the Archbishop of Zaragoza Fray Bernardo de Fresneda, confessor to Charles V and his son Philip II.

The convent, in the Herrerian style, has a beautiful rectangular cloister dating from 1535. The transept stands out, where the tomb of the founder is located, on a high jasper tumulus, and where the marble figure of the bishop rests; it is a beautiful example of Romanesque sculpture. Opposite is the main altarpiece, a magnificent Classicist work, both built around 1605.

Part of it is destined to the Diocesan Workshop for the restoration of works of art, part to the Parador de Turismo and to the Hospital and Asylum for the Elderly “Hospital del Santo”; in front of it, we find the monument to the Pilgrim, from 1971, (work of the Riojan sculptor Vicente Ochoa).
