Bread and Cheese Festival
The Bread and Cheese Festival is a pilgrimage held every 6 August in the town of Quel.
It takes place next to the Chapel of Santo Cristo de Quel. From there, in honour of the Virgin Mary, the members of the fiesta brotherhood throw bread and cheese to all those waiting to pick it up. It began to be held in 1479, following a plague epidemic in which the population of the municipality dropped considerably, and is one of the oldest festivities on the Iberian Peninsula, dating back more than 500 years.
It was declared a Festival of Regional Tourist Interest by the Government of La Rioja in 2004 and of National Tourist Interest in 2015 by the Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism.
