El nombre del monasterio, Valvanera, proviene de una expresión latina “Vallis Venaria” que significa “Valle de las venas de agua” por tratarse este de un valle con abundantes fuentes, arroyos y cascadas. La construcción del santuario tuvo su origen en el hallazgo de una imagen de Santa María del siglo IX por un ladrón arrepentido llamado Nuño Oñez, según está relatado en la “Historia Latina” escrita por el Abad de Valvanera, Don Rodrigo de Castroviejo en el año 1419. The name of the monastery, Valvanera, comes from the Latin expression «Vallis Venaria» which means «Valley of the veins of water» as it is a valley with abundant springs, streams and waterfalls. The construction of the sanctuary had its origin in the discovery of an image of Santa María from the 9th century by a repentant thief called Nuño Oñez, according to the «Historia Latina» written by the Abbot of Valvanera, Don Rodrigo de Castroviejo in 1419.
