Monastery of Valvanera
The Monastery of Nuestra Señora de Valvanera belongs to the municipality of Anguiano and is located in a lush valley of the Sierra de la Demanda at a thousand meters of altitude and close to the top of San Lorenzo.
The current church is of late Gothic style from the end of the 14th century, built from a previous Romanesque temple. It has a single nave in the shape of a cross and in it the Virgin of Valvanera, patron saint of La Rioja, is venerated.
The monastery has an inn and a restaurant served by the monks, while they sell honey and the popular Valvanera herbal liqueur. After the amortization of Mendizábal, from 1883 to 2017 it has been attended by Benedictine monks as a priory of the Monserrat Monastery. The lack of monks from this congregation has now led to three monks from the Institute of the Incarnate Word being the custodians of the Monastery and its services for the Benedictines, who continue to be its owners and administrators.
It receives marches and pilgrimages throughout the year from different municipalities in La Rioja, the most crowded is the 63 km night march that takes place from Logroño on the last Saturday in April, known as «la Valvanerada».
