Foto: Raquel Manzanares
La Rioja, a region with a wine name
La Rioja is a wine-growing region, completely marked by the cultivation of vines and the production of Rioja wine. This can be seen in the landscape of its characteristic vineyards and wineries, in its culture and celebrations, in its gastronomy and also in the way it lives and welcomes visitors. That is why wine is La Rioja’s main tourist attraction and wine tourism is a growing phenomenon.
The RIOJA Qualified Designation of Origin has 65,000 hectares of registered vineyards, more than 500 wineries, some 15,000 farmers and the largest wine-ageing barrels in the world. Rioja wines are exported to 124 countries all over the world.
Rioja is the oldest Designation of Origin in Spain (1925) and the first to obtain the Qualified Designation of Origin (1991). The most characteristic are the red wines aged in barrels, but within RIOJA there is a great diversity of wines depending on whether they are young, crianza, reserva or gran reserva wines, depending on the method of production, the types of grape or the terroir or estate from which they come.
When the grape harvest is over, ochre and reddish tones take over the landscape. What only a few weeks ago were fields full of bunches of grapes and infinite green, the autumn season has arrived in the vineyards of La Rioja. Perhaps the best time to admire the landscapes of this small community. Photo: Raquel Manzanares
